Messing about with Ben Eine

JIMMY BALLISTIC

A refreshing change in a world of street/public art currently dominated by large scale commissioned murals. Not that we're against that, but can't help feeling that the impact of a hundred spray glue soldiers on the subway system is of equal if not more importance than the aforementioned.

Have an idea, wanna be heard? get up and get involved !

Buy some sprayglue, grab some paper, photocopy, paste. Simple and effective. Peace.

DAVID CHOE FOR MOCATV

Something interesting.. so Choe's responsible for getting this blog back on the road.

Decked out with a game room, a radio station, and a remote control tire swing, David Choe's Los Angeles warehouse studio is a testimony to the "bonus level" that he has reached in the art world. As a wildly popular and widely recognized international artist, Choe is also known for his reality TV show, the art he made while detained in a Japanese prison, and the mural he painted for Facebook, valued at over $200 million in Facebook shares. Inside his studio, the painter, muralist, and graffiti writer talks frankly with Alia about the new freedoms and challenges he's facing at this new stage in his practice.

ROA SKATEDECKS

The SK8room presents Roa, a trip to Cambodia. from The SK8room on Vimeo.

To celebrate the launch of The SK8room, the first online platform to promote fine art skateboards around the world, we teamed up with notorious street artist ROA on 3 variations of limited edition skateboard decks that will be available from the 11th of March on our website. Twenty percent of all sales will be donated to Skateistan, a not-for-profit that teaches empowerment through skateboarding to children in impoverished countries like Afghanistan and Cambodia.

As part of the ongoing project, ROA and The SK8room traveled to Cambodia to visit Skateistan, a global nonprofit that works with youths from various socioeconomic backgrounds to build trust and skills through skateboarding, in order to leave a lasting impression on the country through their combined passions of street art and skateboarding.

MTO FILM. THE POLITICS OF MURAL MAKING

"FL : unpremeditated movie" from MTO (Graffiti - Street-art) on Vimeo.

Interesting little film that shows the struggle behind painting walls, sanctioned or not. Well worth a watch for anyone that thinks graffiti/street art has gone mainstream.

URBAN INTERVENTIONS

Ok, we're back. Couldn't resist kick starting the blog with this great piece from melikepainting in Rotterdam, Holland.

Absolutely restored our faith in the power of unsanctioned public art.

Hope to be focusing more on Urban Interventions these coming weeks and months. Feel free to forward us anything of a similar nature.

UPDATE

So you may have noticed that we haven't posted for a while. We've had our hands full getting the gallery up and running these past weeks and thought rather than banging out random murals day after day, we'd give it a rest until either something amazing popped up (It didn't) or we'd recovered from the Winter blues. We have. Expect to see more posts in the coming days...

In the meantime, check out the small but perfectly formed gallery here www.facebook.com/reedprojectsgallery

JUDITH SUPINE CRITIQUES STREET ART :-)

“I am disgusted and bored with and by street art, At one point in my life I was in love with its illegal nature and outsider stature – I loved the aggression and physical violence towards other artists, the destruction of property and thrill of evading the police. Now I detest the comradeship of shit graphic designers – the sanctioned murals. Street makes me think of emails, posh British twats, and the selling of my soul. It was a good way to mask suicidal behaviour – climbing on bridges drunk, taking pills and swimming in rivers… Now the outside stuff feels like advertising and the indoor art has become slower and more contemplative and rewarding.”

Rowan Pybus has produced this short video of the 'fragments of a burnt history' exhibition. Starting in a forgotten and dusty letterpress studio and moving through the installation of the works it gives the viewer a deeper understanding of the body of work.

'Fragments of a Burnt History' is showing at the David Krut Gallery in Johannesburg. Nov 2012 - Feb 2013. The exhibition has been extended for an extra month due to the amount of interest in it, So the gallery is reopening again from the 15 January - 9 February.

EINE & SHOE GET FLOODLIT

Well, this was a pleasant surprise to say the least. The company that donated these two huge walls for Nuart 2012 have added a raft of professional uplights to the works. Respect. It's all well and good securing council support, but it makes a huge difference to have the private sector recognizing what they have. Too often the "ephemeral" nature of Street Art is trotted out as an excuse for it's destruction, personally I'd like to see a lot of these works receiving "listed" status. Not a popular opinion perhaps, but when you look at how many Basquiats are still on the streets, 0 and Haring's 1, well let's hope the Blu's, Banksy's, Swoon's etc don't all go the same way. Discuss..

TILT IN ATLANTA, VIDEO

TILT - ELEVATE from BIG ADDICT on Vimeo.

Great little film documenting French artist Tilt's work in Atlanta earlier this year.

From Tilt
Atlanta, Georgia is one of the sister cities for my hometown, Toulouse France.
This year, through a partnership of The Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs and the French Consulate to Atlanta, I was invited to participate in the 2012 edition of the Elevate Atlanta Art Festival.

This was my first time to Atlanta. I painted this American flag mural made of names. I collected these names from people I met during my time on South Broad Street, the location of my artwork. It was a great experience.

I had many opportunities to meet many different " Americans ", long time residents, store owners, homeless community members, Vietnam vets, a couple by the name "Gay Judges", local Hip Hop stars, preachers, grandmas, gangstas, workers etc. etc....

On the same block, PUSH, HENSE, SEVER and BORN presented big murals as well. My friend GriZZ aka Big Addict was there with me. He produced this beautiful video with very cool pictures. They speak louder than I ... so, enjoy..!

NEW FROM STEN & LEX

Beautiful new work from one of our favourite street art duos Sten & Lex. Here's what they have to say about it. "This is our last work we created in Mentana inside an ancient Church built in 1590 by Michele Peretti grandson of Pope Sisto V. Later it became a convent for franciscans and heremits. The place is the Convent of Mentana. The wall we painted on is new, is not part of the church that was in part detroyed by an earthquake in the early part of the previous century. The woman we portraied is anonymous. We spent about one month to do it not just because it is big but because there are two layer stencils, we had to do twice that which we usually do just once. The lines are all intersected".

ROA. AN INTRODUCTION

ROA at Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne, Australia from Matt Harding on Vimeo.
Needs no introduction to Nuart fans of course, but a terrific little film nonetheless.

Roa recently visited Australia to exhibit his work at Backwoods Gallery, Melbourne. During his stay Roa visited Healseville Sanctuary, a zoo dedicated to native Australian animals, and was commissioned to reinterpret the unique fauna he encountered within the Sanctuary's grounds. Check it out.

ESCIF HITS THE MARK WITH "SWAN LAKE"

The visual image of ballet skirt wearing police officers beating a man makes humor of an otherwise horrifying situation. With this new piece, Escif attached a video of the original police beating edited in unison with a symphony. Clever work as usual from this Spanish artist.

AAKASH NIHALANI FOR NUART 2012

I just received these great shots of a piece that Aakash Nihalani produced for this years Nuart. One of the joys of running Nuart is discovering works we had no idea were produced, it could be a reflection on how out of control things get, our general incompetence, or more likely (we hope), just how much these artists love to work for the shear joy of creating. No prizes, no media coverage, no blogs.. just a LOT of love from the community the works appear in.

The piece is from a series Aakash is working on entitled "Sum Times". Great concept which I'm sure had more than a few heads turning and smiles cracking on the way to work.
